wegn was duly elected king of England in 1013 by the Witan. England would sooner have a Danish king than Aethelred. It shows the depth to which England had sunk during the reign of Aethelred the Unready that they were prepared to accept Swegn as king. Within a year, he had died. This left England without a king. The witan approached Aethelred again who returned for a further two years before he died in 1016.
