Wapentake

A land division of the Danish part of Britain or Danelaw. Similar to the Saxon hundred. Derived from the words, weapon and take. The custom during meetings was to grasp a weapon and wave it in the air which would signify agreement. A wapentake meeting would discuss its administration, tax raising and law and order. It was the duty of each wapentake to regulate itself.
