King of Northumbria ( 633 - 642 ) ( d 642 ). Defeated Cadwallon near Hexham in 633, thereby reuniting Deira and Bernicia. A religious man, he installed St Aiden on Lindisfarne ( Holy Island ) and made him bishop. He was killed in a battle with Penda, who was the king of the Mercians.
