Maldon Battle of

Battle fought in August 991 between the English led by Byrhtnoth and Anlaf of the Danes. Maldon is in the county of Essex. The Danes agreed to retreat if Byrhtnoth, the Ealdorman of Essex paid them danegeld. Byrhtnoth refused. The English were beaten, mainly because the fyrd ran away in panic leaving the thegns to fight on to the death. More will be said in another section on the reasons and logic of the Viking invasions.
