Iona

Island on the west coast of Scotland . Founded by St Columba in 563 who built a monastery. It was considered to be the home of the Celtic church. From here, missionaries spread the word and converted the people. St Aiden in 635 A.D founded Holy island or Lindisfarne. Iona was the subject of constant attack by the Danes, the first in 795 A.D and on a regular basis after that. The monastery was constantly being rebuilt and like Lindisfarne became Benedictine until the time of Henry VIII's religious reforms.
