Feudal System

The process of a lord granting land to a vassal in return for his services or homage. This usually meant military service. The vassal in turn may do likewise by passing smaller plots to his subordinates. The process was primarily instigated after 1066 by the Normans, as there are little or no examples of feudalism in Anglo Saxon England.
