Egbert

King of Wessex ( 802 - 839 ). In 789, prior to becoming king of Wessex, Egbert was exiled by Offa and lived with Charlemagne in his court. On his return in 802 he was elected King of Wessex, and by 825 he had managed to defeat the Danes of Mercia, led by Beornwulf at the battle of Ellundun. Following Unrest in Mercia, he retreated back to Wessex and had control of the surrounding kingdoms only.
