Coinage



Metallic coins first used as currency in the 1st century B.C.Made of gold and minted by the Belgae tribe. Following the Roman invasion, they introduced a currency consisting of the -

Libra = One Pound
Solidi = One Shilling
Denari = One Penny
and
20 solidi = One Pound
12 Denari = One Shilling
240 denari = One Pound



many different coins have been minted over the years but the pound, shilling and penny multiples lasted until 1970 until Britain adopted the metric system.
