Boroughs

A town by charter granted legal liberties. The name is derived from the Saxon word burh, burr or burgh which was a defensive settlement which was built to combat the incessant raids by the Vikings. Alfred the Great constructed many of these in his struggle against them. Many English town names still exist with borough in them.
