 
Athelney
A island in Somerset where the river Tone and Parret meet. It was to here in 878 that Alfred the Great retreated from the Danes. During his time on Athelney he planned and carried out the counter attack which culminated in the Battle of Eddington in May 878. It was also here that the famous story of Alfred burning the cakes was said to have originated. The island no longer exists.
