King of Wessex ( 866 - 871 ). Brother of Alfred the Great. Together they ejected the Danes from Mercia in 870 and beat them again in an overwhelming victory at Ashdown in 871. He died of wounds sustained in a battle near Merton soon afterwards. This left Alfred as king.
