Shieldwall

The Saxon shield wall that William and his men found so hard to break down. The closely joined shields created a barrier to arrows and spears. William had never met this form of resistance before and was at a loss at some stages in the battle to know what to do next to defeat it. Note also the use of kite shaped shields. It is known that round shields were used in the battle by both sides but the tapestry shows none that I can see. A archer is standing by the shield wall. Saxons tended not to use archers but the location of the archer in this image gives the impression that he is Saxon. He may have been employed as a marksman or sniper. The bottom embellishments have now changed from animals to dead and mutilated bodies.
