Spears

A charge by the Norman Cavalry on the Saxon shield wall. The spears were held above the shoulder for a more efficient throwing action. It seems they were not weapons that were used for what is popularly known as jousting charges, but were meant to be released. This would ensure that the rider stayed on his steed which enabled him to turn away quickly to collect another.
